Artificial Forklift Rear-View Blind Spot Monitoring and Active Collision Avoidance
According to statistics, forklift accidents are one of the most significant safety hazards in industrial settings, with over 40% occurring during reversing maneuvers. When operating a forklift manually, the driver’s line of sight is obstructed by the vehicle’s body structure, cargo, and cab pillars, creating a large blind spot at the rear of the vehicle. Particularly in noisy factory environments where people and vehicles mingle, drivers find it extremely difficult to promptly detect pedestrians or low-lying obstacles that suddenly appear behind the forklift, making rollover or collision accidents highly likely.
Application Logic: Using a “high-low combination” approach, two YINTAILI ILS-F31-C/F61 obstacle-detection LiDAR units—each equipped with a protective roof frame for forklifts—are installed at the rear of the forklift’s roof frame and at the bottom of the vehicle’s rear end. The two LiDAR units work in coordination to project laser beams backward: the bottom unit scans close to the ground, detecting low obstacles; the top unit scans downward at an angle, detecting standing persons or suspended objects. When the forklift shifts into reverse gear or begins moving backward, the system automatically activates. Once either a person or an object is detected entering the warning zone, the system immediately triggers an audible and visual alarm in the cab to alert the driver to brake, or directly interfaces with the vehicle controller to achieve automatic deceleration or braking (provided the vehicle supports this feature).
Technological Advantages: This solution leverages the high-precision capabilities of LiDAR. Compared to traditional reversing radars (ultrasonic sensors), it not only offers faster response times—on the order of milliseconds—but also clearly outlines the contours of obstacles, effectively minimizing false alarms. The F31-C and F61 series boast exceptional vibration resistance and an IP65 protection rating, specifically designed to withstand the bumpy, dusty operating conditions typical of forklifts. With its flexible zone-setting feature, users can precisely define alarm zones based on the width of on-site aisles, ensuring that only genuine hazards trigger alerts without unnecessarily disturbing the driver. This makes it a cost-effective and highly practical choice for upgrading older forklifts with intelligent safety enhancements.
