Autonomous Forklift: Lateral Clearance Monitoring and Collision Avoidance in Narrow Aisles

Scenario Requirements and Pain Points:
In automated stereoscopic warehouses pursuing high-density storage, rack aisles are typically designed to be extremely narrow (VNA). When unmanned forklifts travel at high speeds within these aisles, even a slight deviation or an unexpected protrusion of goods from the racks into the aisle can easily lead to accidents such as goods scraping against racks or the forklift becoming stuck. Traditional single-point ranging sensors can only detect fixed points and cannot cover the entire three-dimensional space along the sides, making it difficult to identify irregularly protruding obstacles.

Application Logic:
A T52 3D depth-imaging LiDAR is installed at the center of the forklift’s mast. With its ultra-wide horizontal field of view exceeding 100°, the radar can simultaneously cover the three-dimensional space in front of and to the left and right sides of the forklift.
Gap Monitoring: The T52 system measures in real time the distance between the fork or cargo edge and the shelves on both sides, creating a dynamic “electronic guardrail.” Once the gap is detected to be smaller than the safety threshold (e.g., when a vehicle deviates from its intended path), the system immediately sends feedback to the control system for corrective action.
Obstacle Detection: Scans the spaces on both sides of the aisle, keenly detecting foreign objects protruding from shelves (such as improperly placed pallets or scattered packaging), triggering a stop to prevent side collisions.

Technological Advantages:
The T52’s wide-angle 3D imaging capability is key to handling scenarios like these. It doesn’t require multi-sensor stitching—just a single device can cover the entire width of the aisle. Its all-solid-state design can withstand the continuous vibrations caused by forklift traffic. By generating high-density depth point clouds, the T52 can precisely distinguish between shelf uprights (normal structures) and protruding goods (abnormal obstacles), ensuring smooth passage while providing maximum safety protection for operations in narrow aisles.
