One day, a monkey was bored at home. Its mother gave it a task: go outside and find something to eat to bring home. So the little monkey hopped and skipped out the door, feeling cheerful and full of energy. As it walked along, it spotted a banana tree laden with ripe bananas. Excitedly, it climbed up the tree, picked a banana, and started munching on it while continuing on its way. Not long after, it came across a cornfield. Without finishing the banana it had been eating, it tossed it aside, plucked two ears of corn, and set off again. The little monkey happily hummed a tune as it kept walking. Suddenly, a peach tree appeared right in front of it. The little monkey’s eyes lit up, and without a second thought, it dropped the corn it was holding and ran over to the peach tree to pick and eat peaches.

And so, the little monkey kept walking, eating, and tossing things along the way—until the sun was almost setting. By then, he had nothing left in his hands, his stomach was still empty, and he hadn’t even finished the task his mother had assigned him. Dejected, the little monkey hung his head and started walking back home. Just then, he happened to pass by the elephant’s house and saw an elephant carrying a whole basket of bananas back home, preparing to have dinner with his family. Only then did the little monkey finally understand: no matter what you’re doing, you can’t be half-hearted or distracted—you’ve got to focus wholeheartedly if you want to get things done right.
After returning home, the little monkey confessed his mistake to his mother and promised that from now on he would learn from the elephant—focusing wholeheartedly on his tasks, diligently and steadily completing whatever his mother asked of him, and being a good child.
