LiDAR measures truck volume in seconds with pinpoint accuracy and zero error—this is a new game-changer for logistics and transportation!
2024-04-07
Measurement Principle: LiDAR calculates the distance between itself and a target object by emitting a laser beam toward the object and measuring the time it takes for the beam to travel from emission to reception and back. The volume measurement principle for truck bodies, based primarily on LiDAR’s ranging and imaging capabilities, involves acquiring three-dimensional point cloud data of the truck’s surface and then using this data to compute the truck’s volume, thereby providing the transportation industry with an efficient and precise measurement solution.

Lidar advantages
High-precision measurement: LiDAR can provide high-density point cloud data, ensuring the accuracy of truck volume measurements. By precisely calculating the time of reflection, detailed three-dimensional information about the truck’s surface can be obtained, thus yielding accurate volume data.
High efficiency: Compared to traditional manual measurement methods, LiDAR-based truck volume measurement enables automation and rapid processing. With no need for human intervention, it reduces measurement time and significantly improves work efficiency.
High versatility: LiDAR is unaffected by lighting conditions and can perform measurements even at night or in low-light environments. Moreover, LiDAR can accurately measure the volume of trucks of various shapes and sizes.
Intelligent Integration: Modern LiDAR measurement systems are often combined with computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies, enabling automatic identification and extraction of key truck features, thereby further enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of measurements.

LiDAR-based volumetric measurement can be applied in multiple industries, such as the materials industry, construction industry, cargo terminals, and bulk material measurement.
In industries such as express delivery and freight transportation, LiDAR can quickly and accurately measure the quantity and volume of goods. In the construction industry, LiDAR can be used to measure the volume of building materials, such as bricks and concrete. Particularly in the bulk material measurement sector, LiDAR is especially well-suited for determining the volume of loose materials like sand, gravel, ores, and wood chips. At locations such as ports and warehouses, LiDAR enables rapid acquisition of bulk material volume data, providing crucial information to support inventory management and transportation decision-making.
LiDAR Product Recommendations
1. ILS-H10 3D Profile Scanning LiDAR:
The laser rangefinder has a measurement range of 30 meters, an operating temperature range of -30° to +50°, and an IP67 protection rating. It employs a 2D LiDAR system paired with a servo motor, enabling it to scan and cover a wide 3D field of view of 180° × 160° (adjustable). Paired with professional laser point cloud computing software in the background, it can directly output information such as external dimensions, volume, feature coordinates, and 3D point cloud images.
2. ILS-H13 3D Profile Scanning LiDAR:
The laser measurement range of the ILS-H10 has been upgraded to 80m, and its operating temperature range is -40° to +60°, making it better suited for extreme environments.

LiDAR-based truck volume measurement is a fast, accurate, and safe measurement method suitable for applications across various industries. We believe that as the technology continues to evolve, LiDAR will play an even more important role in the transportation sector.
